![]() Was there a character you really enjoyed writing for the most? Why? And it’s often fun for me to be able to indulge myself by writing a scene several different ways and then letting the player decide which version they want to see. It can be a logistical nightmare at times but really satisfying when it works well. It’s a lot more complicated-a lot more challenging as you have to deal with all the various branching possibilities that can emerge once you let the player make choices that define how the story unfolds. There was a fair amount of latitude to develop the story even within the broad parameters of the season that were already established, and I’ve been able specifically to bring some elements to Episodes 4 and 5 that I think people are going to really enjoy.Īnd what’s it like writing for a video game versus writing for a movie? ![]() Well, I am also the story consultant across the whole series so I had a hand in helping shape the big picture of what the overall season-long story should be and of course in terms of Episode 4. What’s it like to come into writing for a project that’s already fairly well mapped out like The Walking Dead? For instance, I’ll assume the ending of episode 4 was pretty well established beforehand, but how much did you get to guide or even change parts of the story? Through that experience I also became friendly with Robert and so when the game adaptation came around a couple of years later, they came to me as someone they knew had experience both with screenwriting and games it seemed like a natural fit.Īnd when I heard that Telltale was the developer they’d contracted to make the game, I jumped as the chance as they’re one of the few game companies in the business who really put their primary focus on story so I knew there was a great opportunity to tell a story in the interactive medium that could be just as compelling as the comics or the television show. So I was able to wangle my way onto the set of the pilot episode and appear as a zombie in full make-up, which was an absolute blast. I’ve always been a big Walking Dead fan and as luck would have it Robert Kirkman and I have the same manager, who is also a producer on the TV show. How did you get involved with writing episode four of The Walking Dead? I managed to get representation and sell a couple of scripts and got my big breakthrough with The Book of Eli, which was a fantastic experience and really opened a lot of doors for me.īut although screenwriting has now become my full-time job, I never lost my passion for games and as the two art forms have begun to really converge over the past few years, with games becoming just as viable a medium for telling stories as film, I’ve been fortunate to be able to combine my two loves by writing stories for games. ![]() So after I was laid off from my magazine job following the great dotcom crash in 2000, I decided to try a career reboot and give screenwriting a serious try. Part of the reason I made the move to the US was because my other great love was always movies I wanted to pursue my dream of writing them and hoped that being closer to Hollywood would help with that. I started out in the late 1980s as a games journalist in the UK, and that career eventually brought me here to California to take the reins of the American edition of PC Gamer, a magazine I had helped launch back home. Gary, for those that might not know your name, talk about what you’ve been doing the last few years, in terms of screenwriting and even your former job as Editor in Chief of PC Gamer. Unfortunately, no word on when Episode 4 is out, but it will be sometime in October. There are mild spoilers for things that have come before in the franchise, so make sure you’re all caught up before reading. I recently spoke with him over email about Episode 4. He’s currently overseeing the narrative development of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead, but Episode 4, is credited to him as writer. He also has written for episodes of Star Trek: Voyager and Futurama, as well as the movie The Book of Eli. You may know the name as the former editor-in-chief of both the UK and US editions of PC Gamer. There’s a huge stack of games in my apartment right now, that only continues to grow as more and more blockbuster games are released every week-some weeks, it’s multiple AAA games.īut when Episode 4 of The Walking Dead pops up on XBLA, everything else will drop and get put aside for a few hours.Įpisode 4, Around Every Corner!, has a new writer, Gary Whitta.
